Arboriculture Apprenticeship
Part-time
at Capel Manor, Enfield

The aim of an Apprenticeship is to train learners in the basic practical skills appropriate to their position and to provide a platform of key skills to enable further development at Advanced Level.
The Course
The duration of the course is 18 months. Apprentices attend college one day a week term time at Enfield. Candidates can progress at their own pace and are able to complete in a shorter time period.
Course Content
The framework consists of:
- NVQ modules – Level 2 Arboriculture
- Key Skills
Communication Level 1
Application of Number Level 1
Working with Others Level 1
Improving Own Learning Performance Level 1
Problem Solving Level 1
Information Technology Level 1
- First Aid at Work (Emergency)
- NPTC Level 2 Certificate of Competence
- PA1 and PA6 (Safe Use of Pesticides)
- CS30 &CS31 (maintain the chainsaw and felling small trees to bar length of 380 mm)
If candidates already hold any of the above NPTC Certificates then suitable alternatives will be offered.
Candidates must achieve all four mandatory NVQ units plus four optional units. (Two units must be from T25, T26, T29).
Mandatory Units:
- Unit A Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health & safety (ENTO)
- Unit T22 Support arboriculture operations
- Unit T23 Dispose of residues from treework operations
- Unit CU76 Maintain plants outdoors
Optional Units
- Unit T6 Plant trees
- Unit T10 Fell and sned trees motor-manually
- Unit T25 Treat and dispose of stumps
- Unit T26 Carry out off ground arboriculture operations
- Unit T29 Access tree crowns using Mobile Elevated Working Platforms
Entry Requirements
You are welcome to visit the College to discuss and identify with a course tutor and Apprenticeship Manager a study programme that will help you towards your intended career. All students are assessed on an individual basis but the normal entry requirements are:
- educated to GCSE standard and working at Entry Level 3
- at least 16 years old on entry
- You need to either be employed within the Arboricultural Industry or have obtained a work-placement or be working in a voluntary situation.
Assessment
You will be assessed by carrying out a range of practical and written assignments throughout the course in the college and the workplace. There will be end tests or examinations for Key Skills.
Qualifications Gained
Success in this course leads to the nationally recognised award of apprenticeship in arboriculture consisting of City & Guilds NVQ 2 Arboriculture, Key Skills Level 1, Emergency First Aid, NPTC Level 2 Certificate of Competence in Safe Use of Pesticides and NPTC Level 2 Certificate of Competence in maintaining the chainsaw and felling small trees to bar length of 380 mm.
On completion of the course, the learner will be ready to move on to more complex tasks relating to their field of work. Appropriate follow on training might include:
- Advanced Apprenticeship (In process of being written)
- National Certificate in Arboriculture – Level 3 (1 year full-time or 2 days 2 year course)
Progression
Students may progress to NVQ Level 3 Environmental Conservation or the National Certificate in Countryside Management.
Venue
This course will principally take place at Capel Manor’s main campus in Bullsmoor Lane, Enfield but may be available at other centres.
Fees payable by the employer for any student aged 19 or over on 1st August 2007
The cost of the course for 2007/2008 will be £1030.00. This covers the full cost of registration for NVQ Level 2; Key Skills; First Aid Certificate; NPTC 30/31(maintain the chainsaw and felling small trees to bar length of 380 mm); NPTC Foundation Module (PA1) and Hand Held Sprayers (PA6A) in the Safe Use of Pesticides. It also includes a contribution towards tuition fees. Instalment payments are available.
Additional Costs for Equipment
Students need to have ballistic boots, a pruning saw, chain maintenance kit, gloves and wet weather clothing. Students need to provide their own writing materials and folders. There may be a requirement to purchase some reference books.
The Landscape Industry
From our experience of training people it is clear that there are many opportunities for apprentices to gain employment within the London Boroughs, private contractors or local authorities.
Capel Manor College, therefore by offering Apprenticeships is responding to local and national employer needs and will ensure that in the Greater London catchment area served by the College, potential operators do have the relevant skills and knowledge to supply a quality service to meet demands.
