Re-opening of the Farm creates a unique opportunity to study Animal Care on courses run by London’s top specialist Landbased college Capel Manor College is building on the successful range of horticultural courses it currently offers at its Crystal Palace Park centre and offering two new Animal Care courses which will use the soon to be refurbished and restocked farm at Crystal Palace Park. The courses will be at level 1 and level 2 (the equivalent to five good GCSE levels). From September 2009 a level 3 course (equivalent to three A’ levels) will be introduced. The college is investing nearly half a million pounds in repairing and restocking the farm. It will be run by college students (supervised by experienced staff) and, thanks to generous extra support made available through the London Development Agency, will be open to the public several days a week.
Head of College, Madeline Hall, said: Capel Manor also plans to introduce a range of arboricultural courses at Crystal Palace and elsewhere in south London. Capel Manor has Beacon status which means it has been assessed by the government and others as being amongst the top 5% of colleges in the country. Places on courses will be limited in the first year and all those interested are advised to apply to the college at the earliest opportunity. Pictured left is Monica Ward from Shirley, Croydon. She was studying computers but saw a Capel advertisement and decided on a change to follow her love for animals. Monica enjoys the practical days on the course. Miguel Ferreira, (pictured right) from Streatham, plans to go on to the First Diploma and then to University and his ambition is to be a vet, possibly working with reptiles at a Zoo.
Kelly Filmer (pictured left) from Orpington loves animals and wants to learn as much as she can about them. Not sure of her career path at the moment but plans to do the First Diploma later in the year at Crystal Palace. Pictured with Kelly is Samantha Rose from Addiscombe in Croydon. Samantha's ambition is to become a veterinary nurse and enrolled last year after seeing a Capel Animal Care course newspaper advertisement. She too plans to take the First Diploma this September.
Sam Jolley, from Mitcham, works at Holland Park and attends Crystal Palace one day a week on the college's apprenticeship scheme. Holland Park's Head Gardener Stella Fear says the Apprentices have been a valuable addition to the team and the park. It has been so successful that they are planning to take on two more apprentices in September 2007.For further details about each course, click on the blue text (link) in the Course title column below.
