Organic Horticulture
City and Guilds and NPTC Level 2 Certificate in Horticulture
Part-time at Enfield or Gunnersbury Park

The course aims to provide learners with the knowledge and practical skill to understand the complexities of the organic movement. To develop an awareness of a more organic, sustainable and holistic way of life within a wide range of horticultural situations.
The Course
The course runs one year from September to July. A wide range of topics are covered in sessions supported with handouts and practical experience within the gardens. Visits to organic sites are arranged during the year. Students attending the course need to allow 2 hours per week for coursework (to be completed at home)

Outcome 4 Site layout and crop planning
Sustainable Horticulture and Ecological Principles
Outcome 1 Sustainability and the environmental impact of horticulture Outcome 2 Ecology in horticulture
Growing Vegetables Organically
Outcome 1 Growing annual vegetable crops organically
Outcome 2 Growing perennial vegetable crops organically
Aspects of permaculture and wildlife gardening are also covered.
Assessment
The course is divided into 5 units. To gain the NPTC Level 2 Certificate in Organic Horticulture, candidates must pass all 5 units. Units are assessed by a mixture of Practical activities (identification tests, practical assessments and assignment work) and 5 x ½ hour examinations each consisting of 20 multiple choice questions.
Qualification Gained
Success on this course leads to the NPTC Level 2 Certificate in Organic Horticulture.
Progression
Students completing this course often progress onto other part time and full time courses, including RHS Certificate, Garden Design and BTEC National Awards.
- Students should note that these courses have to be applied for well in advance and prospective students have to meet the entry requirements for the specific course.

Additional Support
Students are supported in their studies through regular tutorials and access to study skills tutors where required. There is also access to a specialist library and use of computers.
Entry Requirements
You are welcome to visit the College to discuss and identify with the
course tutor a study programme which will help towards your intended career. All students are assessed on an individual basis, to ensure they have adequate levels of numeracy and literacy normally to a minimum of level 1 standard or a minimum of 4 GCSEs.
However, other relevant qualifications of equivalent standard and/or practical experience in horticulture will also be considered.

Additional Costs
Students will require steel toecap footwear, overalls, wet weather clothing and writing materials. Many students like to keep a photographic record of their time at Capel Manor and students should budget for these costs in addition to travelling and living expenses when making course decisions.
Course Costs
Apart from the course and examination fees, students will need to equip themselves with safety boots, secateurs and protective clothing for practical work.
Venue
This course takes place at Capel Manor’s main campus in Bullsmoor Lane, Enfield and at Popes Lane, Gunnersbury Park, Acton, West London.
