Capel Manor College has received funding through the ‘On your marks’ programme as part of the LSC Pan London ESF Programme 2 to deliver a NEW Sports Turf level 3 programme. If you are striving to increase your knowledge and understanding of sports turf management, attendance on this programme will prove to be invaluable to you. Apart from demonstrating a commitment to continuous professional development, it is an ideal opportunity for you to up-skill at a time when business/employment opportunities are opening up, as 2012 approaches.
An ideal course for anyone looking for the next step up the career ladder. The programme is run over 1 to 2 days part time starting in September 2007.
The Course
This programme consists of 4 units taken from the Advanced National Certificate in Horticulture. The awarding body City & Guilds validates the scheme under the title Technical Certificate – Sports Turf.
Course Content
In brief the general outline of the programme will cover the following topics:
Unit 320 – Manage sports turf areas.
This Unit prepares the candidate to manage sports turf of a range of types, including fine turf (greens), coarse turf (winter sports pitches), and specialist areas such as cricket squares. Routine maintenance activities and specific preparation for and recovery after play are dealt with.
Unit 321 – Management of soil water.
This Unit concerns the establishment and maintenance of drainage systems, and the principles and maintenance of irrigation systems, as they apply to a range of sports turf areas. The design and installation of automatic irrigation systems is not within the scope of this qualification.
Unit 322 – Ancillary planted areas.
This Unit prepares the candidate to establish and manage associated planted areas around or within sports areas, for example trees and shrubs delineating fairways and golf course, decorative areas around a clubhouse and amenity areas around schools playing fields. It includes the management of recently planted and mature areas requiring renovation.
Assessment
You will be required to complete various assignments (Units 320-322) and practical tasks; including plant identification and undertake ONE formal short question paper (D329).
Qualification Gained
Successful completion of all course work for Units 320-322 and the written Unit D329 will enable to gain a Technical Certificate in Sports Turf.
Progression
If you are under the age of 25, completion of this certificate will give you credits towards an Advanced Apprenticeship programme. There are also opportunities to join the following programmes National Certificates/ Diplomas in Horticulture, NVQ 4 Amenity Horticulture Management, Foundation Degree in Garden Design
Entry Requirements
Applicants must live or work within London Boroughs. They must all have the right to work in the UK. Unfortunately, applicants with a qualification, in horticulture, higher than a Level 2 cannot be accepted on the course. Applications are welcomed from those with minimum educational qualifications in line with Level 2 and previous gardening experience. Employed applicants must be employed in firms with no more than 250 employees.
Fees
There are no fees for the course. There will be some limited financial help available for unemployed applicants who have travel and childcare costs. Personal Protected Equipment (PPE) is provided for unemployed applicants.
Equipment
Students will need to have their steel toe-cap boots, secateurs and wet weather gear for inclement weather. A lever arch file with dividers and a note pad are also required.
Venue
This course takes place at Capel Manor College’s main campus in Bullsmoor Lane, Enfield. We are relatively close to public transport being served by Waltham Cross and Turkey Street main line stations (a further 20 minutes walk is required to get to the college). The college is clearly signposted (look for brown tourist signs) on the A10 and as you leave junction 25 of the M25 (check travel updates re access to and from the M25 as there are currently road works in progress).
