Horticulture and Landscaping
 

This course of study is designed to provide a broad introduction to the principles and practice of horticulture for those wishing to pursue a professional career in horticulture and for keen amateur gardeners, particularly those who want the opportunity to have their knowledge formally assessed.

The Course
This is a one year part time day course, held between September and July.

The course enables the student to gain a wide background knowledge in the Principles and Practice of Horticulture, leading to the Royal Horticultural Society Examination in July

The site provides the ideal learning environment and opportunities to see expert gardening practices.

A number of practical based days have been worked into the course to allow students to pick up and practise core horticultural skills.

The Plant (H1) (Double unit)

  • Plant identification and classification
  • Internal and external plant structure
  • Lifecycles and plant growth
  • How plants function and important processes

    Plant propagation (H1)
  • Science and theory behind plant propagation
  • Vegetative propagation
  • Raising plants from seedOutdoor food production (H1)
  • Site selection and food production principles
  • Growing vegetables
  • Growing top and soft fruit

    Garden Planning (H1)
  • Garden surveying and collecting information
  • Principles and elements of design
  • Garden styles
  • Use of hard and soft landscape materials

    The Root Environment (H2)
  • Soil formation, physical properties and makeup
  • Plant nutrition and organic matter
  • Soil management
  • Growing media

    Protected Cultivation (H2)
  • Design and structure of protected environments
  • Controlling the protected environment
  • Growing plants in the protected environment
  • Interior planting and house plants

    Plant Selection, Establishment & Maintenance (H2) (Double unit)
  • Lawn, establishment and care
  • Maintenance and establishment of non-woody plants
  • Maintenance and establishment of trees and shrubs
  • Establishment of garden features such as ponds and borders

    Plant Health (H2)
  • Pests and Diseases how to control them
  • Weeds and how to control them
  • Plant disorders

Qualifications Gained
Success on this course leads to the RHS Level 2 Certificate in Horticulture. This is an accepted entry qualification for the RHS Advanced Certificate and RHS Diploma in Horticulture. Progression onto the OCN Level 3 Plants & Planting course can also be made after completion of an additional 8 week Drawing & Graphics course.

Assessments
Assessment is by two 1½ hour written papers.
Horticulture 1 - Planning Principles and Production (H1)
Horticulture 2 - Ornamental Principles and Maintenance (H2)
Both papers are made up of 15 short answer and 3 long answer questions
Examination is in July

Entry Requirements
No formal entry requirements needed.

Additional Costs
Students must provide their own steel toe-cap safety boots and secateurs.

Venue
This course takes place at Capel Manor's main campus in Bullsmoor Lane, Enfield, at Popes Lane, Gunnersbury Park, Acton, West London, at The Storeyard, Inner Circle, Regent's Park, London and at Upminster Court, Hall Lane, Upminster, Essex.
