Advanced Horticulture Apprenticeship
Part-time at Regents Park

The aim of an Advanced Apprenticeship is to give learners an opportunity to develop and enhance their knowledge and practical skills and to enable them to adapt to the changes required within organisations and the horticultural sector. Students gain self-esteem and confidence required for supervisory roles required within the organisation.
The Course
The duration is two years; this consists of one day per week term time attending college at Regent’s Park. However, to enable the learner to progress at their own pace, the learner may well finish before 24 months.
Course Content
The framework consists of:
- NVQ modules – Level 3 Amenity Horticulture
- Key Skills
Communication Level 2
Application of Number Level 2
Information Technology Level 1
Working with Others Level 2
Improving Own Learning Performance Level 2 - Technical Certificate – Level 3 Advanced National Certificate in Amenity Horticulture
- First Aid at Work (4 day course)
Candidates must achieve all four mandatory NVQ units plus five optional units from the list below.
Mandatory Units:
- Unit 026 - Estimate resource requirements and programme work
- Unit 030 - Promote, monitor and maintain health & safety and security
- Unit 054 - Manage yourself (Management Standards)
- Unit 056 – Manage information for action (Management Standards)
Option A Landscaping
- Unit 016 – Specify and monitor landscape maintenance
- Unit 017 – Produce plants for decorative horticultural displays
- Unit 018 – Maintain and develop decorative horticultural displays
- Unit 019 – Create grassed and planted areas
- Unit 022 – Manage planted areas for their amenity value
- Unit 023 – Prepare sites for landscape construction and installation
- Unit 024 – Construct hard landscape components
- Unit 025 – Restore landscape areas and components
- Unit 036 – Prepare for and maintain equipment and machines
- Unit 042 – Transplant large root-balled trees
- Unit 046 – Prepare and apply pesticides
- Unit 047 – Design landscape areas and specify materials and components
- Unit 048 – Assess the characteristics of sites
- Unit 052 – Improve the customer relationship (ICS)
- Unit 053 – Monitor and solve customer service problems (ICS)
- Unit 055 – Lead the work of teams and individuals to achieve their objectives (Management Standards)
Option B Sports Turf
- Unit 019 – Create grassed and planted areas
- Unit 020 – Manage sports turf areas
- Unit 021 – Manage drainage and irrigation systems
- Unit 022 – Manage planted areas for their amenity value
- Unit 046 – Prepare and apply pesticides.
Assessment
You will be assessed by carrying out a range of practical and written assignments throughout the course in the college and the workplace. There will be end tests or examinations for Key Skills and Technical Certificates.
Qualification Gained
Success in this course leads to the nationally recognised award of an advanced apprenticeship in amenity horticulture consisting of City & Guilds NVQ 3 Amenity Horticulture, Key Skills Level 2, a full First Aid Certificate and Technical Certificate Level 3 in Amenity Horticulture.
Progression
On completion of the course the learner could progress to Foundation Degrees in Garden Design or Parks and Green Spaces or Work Based Learning, subject to approval or any one of a variety of short course programmes, e.g. Health & Safety Certificate. Additionally, courses can be designed to meet individual employer training needs.
Entry Requirements
You are welcome to visit the College to discuss and identify with a course tutor and Apprenticeship Manager a study programme that will help you towards your intended career. All students are assessed on an individual basis but the normal entry requirements are:
- NVQ Level 2 Amenity Horticulture or equivalent qualification or demonstrate substantial relevant occupational experience.
- Minimum 4 GCSEs grade A – C or Key Skills at Level 1
- At least 16 years old on entry
- You must be employed within the Horticultural Industry and be working in a supervisory role.
Fees payable by the employer for any student aged 19 or over on 1st August 2007
The cost of the two year course for 2007/2009 will be £1434.00. This covers the full cost of registration for NVQ Level 3, Level 3 Advanced National Certificate, Key Skills and a Full First Aid Certificate. It also includes a contribution towards tuition fees for the two year course. Instalment payments are available over the two year period.
Additional Costs for Equipment
Students will need to have steel toecap footwear, secateurs and wet weather clothing. Students need to provide their own writing materials, a lever arch file with dividers and folders. Students will need to purchase a design kit, which can be bought through the college for approximately £55. It is also useful to have a camera to record your progress and help support your portfolio of evidence.

This course takes place at The Storeyard, Inner Circle, Regent’s Park, London.
The Landscape Industry
From our experience of training people it is clear that there are many opportunities for Advanced Apprentices to gain employment within the London Boroughs, private contractors or local authorities as supervisors or junior managers.
Capel Manor College, therefore, by offering Advanced Apprenticeships is responding to local and national employer needs and will ensure that in the Greater London catchment area served by the College, potential operators do have the relevant skills and knowledge to supply a quality service to meet demands.
