The Course
The course runs for 8 weeks during the autumn term and students attend for one day each week.

This short course is a pre-requisite for those students who have completed the RHS General Certificate in Horticulture or the C&G Certificate in Practical Gardening and wish to take the NOCN Garden Design: Plants & Planting course. It uses 2 units from the Foundation Course for Garden Design and offers students the opportunity to gain a range of drawing and graphics skills so that they can embark on the Garden Design: Plants & Planting course with greater confidence. No previous drawing experience is required.

Course Content
The course consists of 2 units from the NOCN Foundation Course for Garden Design.

The units are:

  • Introduction to Drawing
  • Graphics & 3 Dimensional Studies

Topics include: drawing exercises both in the studio and in the gardens so building up a portfolio of work. Students will also be introduced to graphics so that they are familiar with new skills and drawing equipment before beginning the Garden Design: Plants & Planting course in September.

Assessment
Each of these units will be assessed separately through coursework. Projects will include a portfolio of drawings, a graphics layout sheet, and a 3-D model.

Students will need to allow at least 8 hours per week for coursework to be completed at home.

Entry Requirements
Students will have completed the RHS General Certificate in Horticulture or the C&G Certificate in Practical Gardening.

Course Costs
All students will need to buy certain drawing materials in order to complete the course. Those going on to take the level 3 Plants & Planting course and then the Principles & Practice course may like to order a complete drawing kit through the college when they enrol for the course. The kit costs around £78 and consists of a technical pen set, compasses, set squares, scale rule, as well as a sketch book, pencils and putty rubber.

Details will be given to all students at enrolment.
