The industry
In a climate of declining manufacturing sectors in Britain such as the leather industry, Capel Manor is committed through its work with the venerable livery companies of Cordwainers, Saddlers and Loriners to keeping the tradition of hand-sewn leatherwork alive.
Is it for me?
Yes, if you are interested in horse riding and the associated industries; you are creative and artistic; you are interested in fashion and the manufacture of leather goods.
Opportunities
The transferable traditional old English saddlery skills see our students enter the workplace with a range of employers such as: Globe-Trotter, J Simpson fine case and leather goods makers, the British Army and the Royal Mews, as well as entering self employment in leather goods design, repairs and restoration and making costumes for historical re-enactments.
Tina Cramer, who left school at 15 to train as a hairdresser with Vidal
Sassoon, decided to return to college after having children. After
studying balloon artistry she opted for a saddlery course as
she is a keen rider. She is now working as a volunteer
saddlemaker with a bespoke saddler, supplying John
Lewis and clients wanting saddles and tack, clock
cases, and handbags.
“ I’d had 13 years out of work and wanted to get
new skills and start a new phase in life with a challenge.
Being a student at Capel is completely different to being at
school and inspired me to be a student mentor. My life’s got a
new direction and I feel so proud of what I‘ve achieved.”
