(Edexcel) BTEC Introductory Diploma in Land and Environment at Capel Manor College
The aim of this one-year Level 1 course is designed to give students knowledge and the opportunity to acquire practical skills in horticulture. This is a full time course and students are required to attend 4 days a week. This course is ideal for school leavers or adults who are looking for a change of career and wish to develop their skills to progress onto Level 2 programmes.

The Course
The Introductory Diploma consists of 3 core units, which provide a background to the industry, 2 personal skills units, and 3 option units, which are chosen by the centre.

Course Content
The framework for the course consists of: -

The course objectives are designed to give you basic horticultural skills and information required to achieve a Level 1 Horticulture qualification. The course will also prepare students for progression onto a course at Level 2 as well as familiarise students with best practises and basic horticultural principles, covering Health & Safety and working as part of a team. The course is also designed to prepare the student for employment in the horticultural industry and to enhance their ability to communicate with their colleagues.

Assessment
The course is assessed through practical and written assignments, which are marked at Pass, Merit or Distinction grade. There is no end of year course examination. You will build up a course portfolio as a permanent record of your coursework.
The NPTC (9352) Level 1 Certificate in Horticultural Skills are assessed through practical performance.

Qualification Gained
Success on this course leads to the nationally recognised Introductory Diploma in Land and Environment along with the NPTC (9352) Certificate in Horticultural Skills and Key Skills Level 1.

Progression
On completion of the course, successful students may be eligible for entry to NVQ Level 2 course programmes, Apprenticeship, BTEC 1st Diploma in Horticulture or an equivalent level programme at Capel Manor College. This will be subject to interview.

Additionally, courses can be designed to meet individual employer training needs.

Entry Requirements
A willingness and commitment to learn new skills in order to achieve the award. Previous experience in horticulture would be a distinct advantage but is not essential.

Entry 3 numeracy/literacy.

Additional Costs
Students need to provide themselves with steel toecap footwear, wet weather clothing, writing materials, folders and secateurs. Please ensure you have these prior to the start of the course.

Venue
This course takes place at Capel Manor’s main campus in Bullsmoor Lane, Enfield and Gunnersbury Park, Popes Lane, Acton, West London W3 8LQ.

Facilities
Students undertake much of their practical work in the gardens where they learn many of the necessary practical skills. An excellent range of plants is also to hand and enables students to gain a good plant knowledge.

The Landscape Industry
From our experience of training people it is clear that there are many opportunities for skilled students to gain employment within the London Boroughs, local authorities or with private contractors.

Capel Manor College, therefore, by offering foundation programmes is responding to local and national employer needs and will ensure that in the Greater London catchment area served by the College, potential operators do have the relevant skills and knowledge to supply a quality service to meet demands.
