Part-time at Enfield or Crystal Palace


Apprenticeships at Capel Manor College
The aim of an Apprenticeship is to train learners in the basic practical skills appropriate to their position and to provide a platform of key
skills to enable further development at Advanced Level.

The Course
The duration of the course is 20 months. Apprentices attend college one day a week term time at Enfield or Crystal Palace. Candidates can progress at their own pace and are able to complete in a shorter time period.

Course Content
The framework consists of: NVQ modules – Level 2 Amenity Horticulture Key Skills Communication Level 1 Application of Number Level 1 Working with Others Level 1 Improving Own Learning Performance Level 1 Two legislative or occupational tests First Aid at Work (Emergency) Candidates must achieve both mandatory NVQ units plus five optional units. For example if you work in the landscape maintenance sector the following may be of interest to you:

*There are other optional units that could be used instead of the 5 stated. If the above topics do not fit into your work naturally please talk to the college regarding alternative options including hard landscape construction.

Alternatively, the college is currently seeking approval to run the following topic areas:

1 Nursery (0329-24)
2 Interior Landscaping (0329-25)

Assessment
You will be assessed by carrying out a range of practical and written assignments throughout the course in the college and the workplace. There will be end tests or examinations for Key Skills.

Qualification Gained
Success in this course leads to the nationally recognised award of apprenticeship in amenity horticulture consisting of City & Guilds NVQ 2 Amenity Horticulture, Key Skills Level 1, Emergency First Aid and two legislative or occupational tests.

Entry Requirements
You are welcome to visit the College to discuss and identify with a course tutor and Apprenticeship Manager a study programme that will help you towards your intended career. All students are assessed on an individual basis but the normal entry requirements are:

Fees payable by the employer for any student aged 19 or over on 1st August 2007
The cost of the course for 2007/2008 will be £781.00. This covers the full cost of registration for NVQ Level 2, Key Skills, NPTC Foundation Module (PA1) and Hand Held Sprayers (PA6A) and Emergency First Aid Certificate. It also includes a contribution towards tuition fees. Instalment payments are available.

Additional Costs for Equipment
Students will need to have steel toe-cap boots, secateurs and wet weather gear for inclement weather. A lever arch file with dividers and a note pad are also required. It is also useful to have a camera to record your progress and help support your portfolio of evidence.

Venue
This course takes place at Capel Manor’s main campus in Bullsmoor Lane, Enfield and at Crystal Palace, Lewisham.

The Landscape Industry
From our experience of training people it is clear that there are many opportunities for apprentices to gain employment within the London Boroughs, private contractors or local authorities. Capel Manor College, therefore by offering Apprenticeships is responding to local and national employer needs and will ensure that in the Greater London catchment area served by the College, potential operators do have the relevant skills and knowledge to supply a quality service to meet demands.
