Capel Manor College at Enfield
The Enfield campus is set in 32 acres of idyllic parkland, theme and wooded/wilderness gardens, plus water features and a range of trial gardens, sponsored by Garden Which? The College also runs a working farm at nearby Forty Hill, close to Enfield Council’s historic Forty Hill Museum and conference centre.
The Capel Manor estate records go back to the 13th century, whilst the present Georgian Manor House can be traced back to 1750. During the mid 1960s, the eminent local horticulturist Frances Perry, resident nearby, suggested to the local authority that it would be opportune for the council to lease the badly neglected gardens of Capel Manor and a few out buildings, in order to train craftsmen gardeners, then mostly employed in local authority parks departments. Enfield agreed and in 1968 the first group of students began training. There were twelve students then. Forty years later, we welcome more than two thousand students.
