NORWICH STUDENTS SCOOP HORNIMAN PRIZE
Students from Easton College in Norwich have scooped first prize in a national competition to re-design the Horniman Museum’s outdoor animal display set within its sixteen acres of Gardens.
The students, Edward Blackmore, Lee Slater and Jodie Goldsmith, created the Amazonian Experience incorporating small mammals and birds from South America to win the first prize of £1,000 for themselves, plus £400 for their college. The competition, generously supported by NPTC City and Guilds, Ed-excel and Lantra and run in conjunction with Capel Manor College, received over 70 entries from students studying animal care from across the country. Six finalists were then invited to present to a panel of judges from the Horniman Museum, Capel Manor College and the competition sponsors.
The second prize went to Amy Fox and Ella Body from Merrist Wood Campus, Guildford College who received £400 plus a further £200 for their college.
Kirsten Walker, Chair of Judging from the Horniman, said “We were delighted at the level of creativity and imagination displayed by the students. Entries were of a very high quality and picking a winner proved quite a challenge. We hope that some of the ideas submitted may find their way into our future Gardens plans”.
The ideas from the competition will be considered by the Horniman as part of a major project to upgrade the Horniman Gardens. The Horniman is currently developing plans and seeking funding for its Gardens, with work aiming to commence by 2010. The public are invited to submit any ideas or suggestions on future plans for the Gardens to Marketing, Horniman Museum, 100 London Road, Forest Hill, London, SE23 3PQ or by e-mail to marketing@horniman.ac.uk.
